Kutna Hora by Train or on a Tour?

Yes, Kutna Hora works as a day trip from Prague by train. Czech Railways runs the Vysocina express from Prague main station to Kutna Hora hl.n. every hour and the trip takes about 1 hour.

The Train on Your Own

The Vysocina express leaves Prague main station for Kutna Hora hl.n. every hour. The ride takes about 1 hour and a one-way 2nd class ticket starts from $3.63 (79 CZK), changing with the train and how early you book. Tickets go on sale up to 90 days ahead. Children under 6 travel free and ages 6-17 and 65+ get 75% off.

Kutna Hora hl.n. sits in Sedlec, a short walk from the Sedlec Ossuary. The old town needs a second leg: a small local diesel train continues from hl.n. to Kutna Hora mesto station near the historic centre. With the change, the whole trip takes 1 hour 6 minutes. The Kutna Hora-Sedlec stop has no ticket office, so buy on the train.

Book your ossuary time slot before you travel. The parish cannot guarantee entry without a reservation, so this is the one booking to make on your own. See the ticket rules in the ossuary ticket section.

What a Tour Adds

A tour bundles the pieces that a self-guided day needs arranging. You get a guide, transport between Sedlec and the old town, and on most group tours the ossuary time slot and church tickets. Where a tour's entries are included, the operator carries the timed ossuary booking for you, which removes the main planning step.

Group coach tours run about 6 hours door to door. The pick is the Kutna Hora UNESCO Tour by Train with Bone Chapel at $81 per person for 6 hours, with round-trip train tickets, seat reservations and the ossuary and St Barbara's entries in the price. Small-group days run 7-9 hours and add hotel pickup and smaller vans. If you book a tour with entries excluded or not stated, you still need your own ossuary slot.

Train Tours With a Guide

Three tours use the same Vysocina line you would ride on your own, with a guide handling the ossuary slot and the entries. The Kutna Hora UNESCO Tour by Train with Bone Chapel costs $81 per person and runs 6 hours. The Kutna Hora Day Tour by Train with Sedlec Ossuary costs $91.24 for 7 hours with entry fees included except the Church of St James. The Private Kutna Hora Day Trip by Train costs $154.53 for 10 hours with hotel pickup. Compare them all in the tour comparison.

What to See in Kutna Hora, in Walking Order

Kutna Hora's historic centre, together with St Barbara's Church and the Cathedral of the Assumption at Sedlec, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The sights below fall into a natural walking order across one day.

Sedlec: the Ossuary and the Cathedral

Start in Sedlec, where the train from Prague arrives. The Sedlec Ossuary, also called the Bone Church, sits in the lower chapel of All Saints Church, a functioning Roman Catholic church. The Cathedral of the Assumption stands nearby and can be visited without a reservation during opening hours.

The combined Areal Sedlec ticket covers both chapels of All Saints and the cathedral and costs $8.27 (180 CZK) for adults, $5.51 (120 CZK) for seniors and students and $3.67 (80 CZK) for children. Entry to the ossuary needs a booked time slot, with a 30-minute cap in the lower chapel and no photography inside. The cathedral allows photos without flash.

St Barbara's Church and the Jesuit College

Walk from Sedlec towards the old town and you reach St Barbara's Church, the great mining cathedral at the head of the Jesuit College terrace. The ticket is separate from the Sedlec ticket and costs $8.27 (180 CZK) full, $6.43 (140 CZK) reduced and $2.76 (60 CZK) for children from age 6, with under 6 free. The time inside is unlimited.

A guided tour, The Story of a Perfect Cathedral, costs 600 CZK on top of entry during opening hours and needs booking at least 2 weeks ahead through the cathedral. The Jesuit College itself faces the church across the terrace and closes the view over the valley.

The Italian Court

The Italian Court, the former royal mint, sits in the heart of the centre. It sells routes rather than a single ticket, and only the palace route is guided.

The Italian Court is open daily 10:00-17:00 from January to March, 9:00-18:00 from April to September and 10:00-17:00 from October to December, with a lunch break 11:45-12:15.

  • Route 1, the cellar, self-guided: 50 CZK
  • Route 2, the Royal Mint, self-guided: 120 CZK
  • Route 3, the Royal Palace, guided: 150 CZK in Czech or 190 CZK in English
  • Routes 1+2+3 combined: 220 CZK in Czech or 260 CZK in English

Hradek and the Medieval Silver Mine

The Czech Silver Museum at Hradek, at Barborska 28 near St Barbara's, runs the guided mine tour. It lasts about 90 minutes and covers about 250 m of the original medieval mine. You get a helmet with a headlamp and a miner's hooded jacket. The tour, Circuit II Cesta stribra, costs 200 CZK for adults.

Children under 6 may not enter the mine and children 6 to 10 go only with adults. The museum is closed on Mondays unless a public holiday and closed in winter, from 11 January to 1 March, reopening for the new season after that. Booking is recommended online or by phone.

St James and the Stone Fountain

The Church of St James rises over the old town near the Italian Court, and the Gothic Stone Fountain stands a few streets away. Both are outside sights you pass on a walk through the centre, so they cost nothing to add to the day. Group tours with a walking part, like the Kutna Hora Historic Center and Ossuary Tour, name both stops.

That walk lists the St James belfry, the Bishop's Seminary, an original silver mine and the Royal Mint, then gives 45 minutes of free time in town. The Italian Court, the former Royal Mint, is open 9:00-18:00 from April to September with a break 11:45-12:15, so a walk that ends there around midday may meet the lunch closure.

Sedlec Ossuary Tickets: Book a Time Slot

Yes, you need to book Sedlec Ossuary tickets in advance. The parish sells tickets online for a set date and time and states that without a reservation entry cannot be guaranteed.

Prices and Hours

The Sedlec parish runs the ossuary and the Cathedral of the Assumption together, and its combined Areal Sedlec ticket covers both. The figures below come from the parish's own ticket pages. St Barbara's Church is sold separately by a different office, so there is no official combined ticket for the ossuary and St Barbara's.

The ossuary is open daily 9:00-18:00 from April to September, 9:00-17:00 in March and October, and 9:00-16:00 from November to February. It closes on 24 December. St Barbara's Church is open daily 9:00-18:00 from April to October and 10:00-17:00 in November, December and March. In January and February it opens 10:00-16:00.

The visit to the lower chapel, the ossuary itself, is capped at 30 minutes. The upper chapel has no time limit and the ticket has no guide, so the visit is independent with leaflets available.

St Barbara's Church$8.27 (180 CZK)$6.43 (140 CZK)$2.76 (60 CZK), age 6 and up

Slot Rules

The time on the ticket is the entry time. Arrive about 5 minutes before your slot and no more than 10 minutes after it, because a late arrival may be refused. A ticket's time cannot be changed. You can cancel up to 3 days before the visit and the refund comes back as a voucher valid for 12 months, useful if a new slot is free.

Photography is prohibited inside the ossuary. It is a resting place and a functioning church, and no food, drink, pets or large bags are allowed either. Large bags and motorcycle helmets go in lockers at the Sedlec Information Centre at Zamecka 279.

Buy only from the parish's own site, which it states is the only official ticket website, or at the Information Centre in person. Reconstruction of the ossuary runs to at least 2030 and it stays open throughout. Entry is currently by a temporary wooden staircase and the ossuary is not wheelchair accessible.

Tours That Carry the Tickets

These tours include the ossuary tickets with the timed slot, so you do not book it yourself: the Kutna Hora UNESCO Tour by Train with Bone Chapel, the Kutna Hora Coach Tour with Bone Church and St Barbara, the Guided Kutna Hora Tour with Ossuary Entry, the Small-Group Kutna Hora and Folk Village Tour, the Kutna Hora Day Trip with Czech Lunch, the Private Guided Kutna Hora Tour with Transfers and the Private Kutna Hora Day Trip with Lunch.

On the Kutna Hora Historic Center and Ossuary Tour and the Private Kutna Hora Day Tour by Car you pay for entries on the day, so you still need your own ossuary slot. For the Private Kutna Hora Day Trip by Train and the Private Kutna Hora Tour with a Local Brewery the listings do not state entry tickets, so ask the operator before booking. The Kutna Hora Day Excursion with Free Time includes tickets only on its guided option with entries.

How Much Time Do You Need in Kutna Hora?

A day trip from Prague to Kutna Hora fits easily into one day. Most group tours run about 6 hours door to door, and the Sedlec Ossuary itself is capped at 30 minutes inside the lower chapel.

A Six-Hour Day

Six hours covers the essentials. The coach days, Kutna Hora Coach Tour with Bone Church and St Barbara and Guided Kutna Hora Tour with Ossuary Entry at $65 each, and the pick, Kutna Hora UNESCO Tour by Train with Bone Chapel at $81, all run 6 hours. That gets you a timed ossuary slot of up to 30 minutes in the lower chapel, a look inside St Barbara's Church and a walk through the UNESCO old town. Kutna Hora Day Excursion with Free Time runs 6.5 hours and adds about 1 hour of free time on the ground. Kutna Hora Historic Center and Ossuary Tour is listed at 3 hours in town plus 75 minutes each way by van from your hotel, though its entry tickets are bought on the spot.

On the train you can also do it alone. Czech Railways runs the Vysocina express from Prague main station to Kutna Hora hl.n. every hour, about 1 hour each way, from $3.63 (79 CZK) one way. The main station sits in Sedlec near the ossuary, and a small local train continues to Kutna Hora mesto by the historic centre.

A Longer Day

Small-group and private days of 7 to 10 hours add the sights a 6-hour coach run skips. The medieval mine tour at the Czech Silver Museum (Hradek) lasts about 90 minutes and covers about 250 m of tunnel, helmet and lamp included. Kutna Hora Day Tour by Train with Sedlec Ossuary runs 7 hours, Kutna Hora Day Trip with Czech Lunch runs 7 hours with a Czech lunch, and Small-Group Kutna Hora and Folk Village Tour runs 8-9 hours and adds a folk village museum. On the private side, Private Kutna Hora Day Trip by Train runs 10 hours and visits the silver mine museum, or the Italian Court interiors on Mondays and from December to March, and Private Kutna Hora Tour with a Local Brewery runs 8 hours with a beer tasting.

Is a Kutna Hora Day Trip Worth It?

Yes, and it is unlike any other day out from Prague. The Kutna Hora site, the historical town centre with the Church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec, joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. In one day you see a chapel decorated with human bones, two UNESCO-listed churches, a Gothic cathedral with frescoes and a medieval royal mint.

The honest limit: the ossuary is small, the lower chapel visit is capped at 30 minutes, and entry runs on timed tickets. If the bones are the only thing drawing you, a coach day is enough. If you want the mine, the Italian Court and the old town, book a longer small-group or private day.

The Honest Small Print

Every Kutna Hora day trip from Prague has limits. Here they are before you pay.

  • The Sedlec Ossuary runs on timed tickets: without a reservation entry cannot be guaranteed, per the Sedlec parish.
  • An ossuary ticket's time cannot be changed, and a cancellation up to 3 days before is refunded as a 12-month voucher.
  • Photography is banned inside the ossuary, and the lower chapel visit is capped at 30 minutes.
  • The Kutna Hora Historic Center and Ossuary Tour and the Private Kutna Hora Day Tour by Car leave church tickets to you.
  • The silver mine at Hradek is closed on Mondays and in its winter break, and children under 6 may not enter.
  • The Kingdom Come Deliverance II Locations Tour is priced per group up to 3, not per person.

Dos and Don'ts for a Kutna Hora Day Trip

Do

  • Do book an ossuary slot yourself if your tour does not include entries, because without a reservation entry cannot be guaranteed. Tours with entries included, like the pick, carry the tickets for you.
  • Do arrive at the ossuary about 5 minutes before your slot and no more than 10 minutes after it, because the time on the ticket is the entry time and a late arrival may be refused.
  • Do buy your ticket on the train if you board at Kutna Hora-Sedlec stop, because that station has no ticket office.
  • Do check what your ticket covers before you go, because the ossuary and St Barbara's are sold by different offices and there is no official combined ticket for the two.

Don't

  • Don't photograph inside the ossuary, because the parish bans photography there as a resting place and a functioning sacred space.
  • Don't plan the silver mine for a Monday or the winter break, because the museum closes Mondays and shuts entirely in its winter season.
  • Don't trust blogs that say ossuary tickets are bought on site, because the parish states entry without a prior online reservation cannot be guaranteed.
  • Don't take children under 6 into the mine, because the museum bans them and ages 6 to 10 may enter only with an adult.

Everything Else Worth Knowing

When to Do the Kutna Hora Day Trip

The churches open all year, though hours shrink in winter and the silver mine takes a break. Spring to autumn gives the longest days at every site.

Season by Season

The table below compares the official opening hours at the two main churches and the medieval mine at Hradek, taken from the Sedlec parish, St Barbara's parish and the Czech Silver Museum. The ossuary sells timed tickets all year. The mine sits inside the museum's season, so it closes in the winter break and every Monday.

Days to Avoid

A few dates and days trip up plans. The ossuary is closed on 24 December. The Cathedral of the Assumption at Sedlec closes on Good Friday and Holy Saturday and opens at 11:00 on Sundays the rest of the year.

The Czech Silver Museum closes every Monday unless a public holiday falls on one, and in its winter break. St Barbara's also shuts on 24 December. If the mine is on your list, pick a Tuesday to Sunday between April and November.

Weekend-Only Sights

Some smaller sights open only on certain days. The Church of St James at Sedlec opens on weekends and public holidays in May, June and September, 10:00-17:00, and Friday to Sunday in July and August. Its tower is closed this season for roof repairs.

Plan a weekend trip if you want to step inside it as well.

Lunch on a Kutna Hora Day Trip

Most group tours leave lunch to you. A few small-group and private days build a meal into the price.

Which Tours Include Lunch

Kutna Hora Day Trip with Czech Lunch includes a traditional Czech lunch at a medieval restaurant in the centre plus one beer, wine or soft drink. Private Kutna Hora Day Trip with Lunch includes a main dish with a drink and a small local treat. Kingdom Come Deliverance II Locations Tour serves an a la carte medieval lunch at a historical site with one main course and one drink. Small-Group Kutna Hora and Folk Village Tour includes lunch only on its selected options with a main course and a drink.

The group days expect you to pay on the spot. Kutna Hora UNESCO Tour by Train with Bone Chapel stops at Restaurace Dacicky for lunch at your own expense, with about a relaxed hour set aside. Kutna Hora Tour with Hotel Pickup and Entries leaves the meal to free time in town. Reviewers of some 6-hour coach days note there is little time to buy food, so snacks are worth carrying.

Kutna Hora Day Trip from Prague: Questions

Is a day trip to Kutna Hora worth it?

Yes. The town centre with St Barbara's Church and the Sedlec cathedral has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995, and a day also gets you the bone chapel and a medieval mint. See what fits in a day.

Can I take a day trip from Prague to Kutna Hora? How do I get there by train?

Yes. The Czech Railways Vysocina express runs from Prague main station to Kutna Hora hl.n. every hour, about 1 hour each way, from $3.63 (79 CZK) one way. The main station sits in Sedlec, near the ossuary, and a small local train continues to Kutna Hora mesto by the old town. Details in train or tour.

How much time do you need in Kutna Hora?

About 6 hours door to door covers the ossuary, St Barbara's and the old town on a group tour, and the ossuary visit itself is capped at 30 minutes in the lower chapel. Longer 7-10 hour days add the mine and the Italian Court. Details at how long you need.

Do you need to book Sedlec Ossuary tickets in advance? How much are they?

Yes, tickets are sold online for a set date and time and entry without a reservation cannot be guaranteed. The combined Sedlec ticket with the ossuary and the Cathedral of the Assumption is $8.27 (180 CZK) for adults. Slot rules are in ossuary tickets.

Can you take photos in the Sedlec Ossuary?

No. Photography is prohibited in the ossuary because it is a resting place and a functioning sacred space. Photographers can shoot without flash in the Cathedral of the Assumption instead. More in ossuary tickets.

Is a tour or the train better for Kutna Hora?

The train is cheapest from $3.63 (79 CZK) one way but you manage the ossuary slot yourself. A guided day handles tickets and timing for you, like the train-based pick with both church entries included. The trade-offs are in train or tour.

Which is the best day trip from Prague for history?

For Gothic churches and the silver story, Kutna Hora: its historic centre with St Barbara's Church and the Sedlec cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, and the Hradek mine tour takes you about 250 m into a medieval mine. See what to see.

Do any Kutna Hora tours include lunch?

Yes, a few. Kutna Hora Day Trip with Czech Lunch includes a Czech lunch with a drink, and the private day with lunch includes a main dish and a drink. On group days like the pick you pay for lunch on the spot.

The pick, the Kutna Hora UNESCO Tour by Train with Bone Chapel, runs 6 hours by train with a guide and both church tickets for $81 per person.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, per the listing.
